Our domestic security shutters are designed to be very low maintenance and easy to use. Manufactured from lightweight and corrosion resistant aluminium, they can stay looking their best for years’ after installation.

Adverse weather conditions and pollution, however, can lead to annoying scratches or marks. This is usually the result of dirt building up on your shutter curtain, or around the shutter mechanism.

External window shutters tend to be more exposed as they feel the full effect of changing weather conditions. This is particularly likely in coastal locations where the salt air environment can cause further build up – making cleaning even more important if you live by the sea!

ARE SHUTTERS EASY TO CLEAN?

All our security shutters are easy to clean and maintain. Quality components give you the benefit of increased reliability and efficiency, and make cleaning requirements less frequent.

For a general clean, we recommend the steps listed below. This should give your shutters the care they need, and help avoid costly repairs.

1. Remove any dirt and dust

Take a damp cloth and apply a mild detergent to help remove any dirt or grime from the shutter curtain. Make sure the security shutter is fully open and wipe in a downward motion until you have covered the entire surface.

You should also clean the inside of your roller shutter to help reduce the risk of any damage during operation.

2. Clean between the slats and guides

Slightly roll up each shutter slat to expose gaps between the slats, and wipe away any debris. Special attention should be paid to the bottom slats which tend to attract the most dirt as they are closest to the window sill and frame.

3. Check for scuffs or marks

You can remove any scuffs and marks by using any standard car polish. Gently rub the affected area, being careful not to cause any scratches.

4. Remove any debris and rinse

Use a soft bristle brush to gently dislodge any twigs or dirt that may have become trapped between the shutter guide and curtain, before rinsing the entire shutter.

HOW OFTEN DO SECURITY SHUTTERS NEED TO BE CLEANED?

To help make sure your security shutters are working their best for longer, we suggest carrying out a thorough cleaning every 12 to 18 months. This helps take care of any visible marks or scuffs, and gives you a chance to assess the impact of any general wear and tear.

Any marks to the finish, or chips in the paintwork, will need to be touched up to in order to avoid the possibility of corrosion. This is something our service team are able to take care of, with touch up paints available to match any RAL or BS colour.

CAN YOU HAVE SHUTTERS PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED?

For properites in industrial or coastal areas, it is sometimes worthwhile to organise for a professional to clean each shutter. This is included as part of our shutter servicing packages and is designed to increase the lifetime of your security.
